Grace Anglican Church: A Rich History in the Milton Community

Grace Anglican Church has stood on the hill high above the Sixteen Mile Creek overlooking Downtown Milton since 1852. The original church was a one storey, white wooden frame building with clapboard siding and a steeple. In 1895, it was hauled to the back of the property by teams of horses and the current grey stone church was built in front of it. The current Grace Church is of the English gothic style and has a castle-like appearance.

Grace Church has served Milton for 174 years since the first travelling missionaries arrived in 1844. The spiritual needs of the townspeople were met with regular Sunday worship services and the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Matrimony, and Holy Communion, along with ministering to the sick and burials. Many funerals and memorial services were held for soldiers during World War I and for many townspeople during the influenza epidemic. The church provided aid during the depression and worked with the Canadian Red Cross during both World Wars.

Today, Grace Church continues to have an active outreach program in Milton. Community suppers and fellowship are held the first Thursday of every month free of charge to everyone. A food bank is kept at the church and gift cards for food or gas are available to those in need. Grace Church serves as the distribution area for the Halton Fresh Food Program in Milton, making affordable fresh produce accessible to subscribers. Food and gifts are donated at Christmastime and the church also provides affordable rental space for service groups. The annual Spring Fair and Christmas Bazaar are open to everyone and well-attended by the community.

Grace Church welcomes all to admire their stunning architecture and in the summer, the beautiful flower gardens. The church is open most weekday mornings, so come explore the beautiful interior and stained-glass windows. Attend one of their community dinners or a quiet reflective communion service which is held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursdays and 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Enjoy uplifting organ music at the Sunday 10:00 a.m. service. Grace Anglican Church is here to serve the community of Milton and would be honoured by your presence.
